Telomeerziekten of ‘telomere biology disorders’ omvatten een spectrum van aandoeningen die worden veroorzaakt door pathogene kiembaanvarianten in genen die betrokken zijn bij het onderhoud van de telomeerlengte. Deze varianten resulteren in abnormaal korte telomeren, wat onder meer kan leiden tot bijvoorbeeld het syndroom dyskeratosis congenita, maar ook tot beenmergfalen, longfibrose, levercirrose en een verhoogd risico op maligniteiten. In dit overzichtsartikel zullen de pathofysiologie, diagnostiek en behandelopties van telomeerziekten worden besproken.
