Spectrale flowcytometers meten, in tegenstelling tot conventionele flowcytometers, het volledige emissiespectrum in plaats van slechts een gedeelte van het emissiespectrum. Hierdoor kunnen spectrale flowcytometers 25 tot 40 markers tegelijk meten en onderscheiden. Deze toename in het aantal gemeten markers zorgt ervoor dat er meer gedetailleerde informatie per cel kan worden verkregen. Dit is voordelig in situaties waarbij slechts minimale hoeveelheden materiaal van de patiënt beschikbaar zijn, in gevallen met complexe differentiële diagnostiek en voor gevoelige monitoring van minimale restziekte.
